After visiting the Altamira cave paintings in northern Spain, Pablo Picasso famously exclaimed "after Altamira, all is decadence". He wasn't kidding. The art in this cave and in many others that dot parts of France, Spain and other regions in the world are among the greatest pieces of art ever created. Like all great art they provide an insight into the way that people thought, even though it was tens of thousands of years ago.

Cave paintings are paintings on cave walls and ceilings, and the term is used especially for those dating to prehistoric times. The earliest known European cave paintings date to Aurignacian, some 32,000 years ago. The purpose of the paleolithic cave paintings is not known. The evidence suggests that they were not merely decorations of living areas, since the caves in which they have been found do not have signs of ongoing habitation. Also, they are often in areas of caves that are not easily...

Here are some highlights of my trip to France. We spent six days exploring the wonders of the Dordogne River valley including prehistoric cave paintings, sculptures, tools and artifacts. We stayed in the medieval town of Sarlat-la-Caneda, visited many ancient castles, abbeys, and stone villages.

There is a wonderful Museum of Prehistory in the village of Les Ezyies. There we also entered the caves of Rouffignac and Font de Gaume and saw exquisite paintings made 18,000 years ago.

What they found was that early cave paintings depicted the correct gait far more than depictions of four-legged animals from the Renaissance and beyond. Even Leonardo Da...

Taking into account we consider cave paintings as such, technology has evolved much since the oldest paintings in Chauvet, France, which "has some of the most spectacular prehistoric cave art in the world. Cave Paintings - Wonderland - Rupestre Ancient

Cave paintings are paintings found on cave walls and ceilings, and especially refer to those of prehistoric origin. The earliest such rock art in Europe dates back to the Aurignacian period, approximately 40,000 years ago, and is found in the El Castillo cave in Cantabria, Spain. The exact purpose of the paleolithic cave paintings is not known. Evidence suggests that they were not merely decorations of living areas since the caves in which they have been found do not have signs of ongoing...
