Henri Matisse: Drawing with Scissors by Jane O'Connor

Shelves: kids , mine-read

I originally checked this book out due to the author. My 2 year old granddaughter and I have read several of her "Fancy Nancy' books and I wanted to see how this book was. It was a bit on the 'older' side to read to her (although I probably could have) I choose to just read it myself. It was a surprisingly nice read. A bit overwhelming at times but for an older child...

The Iridescence of Birds: A Book About Henri Matisse by ...

Shelves: kids-non-fiction , kids-picture-books , historical , arts

I cannot imagine an elementary art teacher anywhere in America who, upon seeing this book for the first time, would not declare with wide open eyes, I have got to have this book. It's wonderful!

The story is all about how looking at the world around you can inspire creativity and dreaming. Hadley Hooper's illustrations, done in...

White City Blue by Tim Lott - Goodreads

Shelves: fiction , borrowed-read , read-in-undergrad

I read this for a class way back in my undergrad days. The class was based on the modern British novel, and it's part of a pretty popular subgenre called "lad lit" AKA "What hell hath Nick Hornby wrought?" It's like chick lit, except it's worse because it's full of misogyny. (Not that I would include Hornby in that category. He, unlike most of...

Building the Blue Ridge Parkway by Karen J. Hall

Jun 15, 2017 Monica rated it it was ok

This is a rather perfunctory book about the construction of the amazing Blue Ridge Parkway. There are archival b/w photos of the barracks where workers lived and machinery. I should take another look when have time but for such an amazing highway I would have hoped for a much more amazing book.

Portrait of Picasso as a Young Man by Norman Mailer

Sep 01, 2009 Matt rated it really liked it

Norman Mailer managed through a long, long career to make himself a towering emblem of inadvertent comedy and ill-will; see for example John Cheever's parody of him (with, I believe, Mailer in the audience) in a 1965 MLA speech, where he relates "the adventures of a hypothetical novelist who, in search of material, becomes a war correspondent, spy,...
